Sochi, where Czarist and Communist elites vacationed, is a graceful city of 400,000 whose palm-fringed seaside is lined with Soviet-era sanitoriums. President Vladimir Putin summers here and often skis at the nearby resort of Krasnaya Polyana. Many ordinary Russians still flock here as well.

Sochi is the Russian Riviera. Sand and pebble beaches stretch for nearly 20 miles along the Black Sea coast. Here you can find the most northern subtropics in the world.

You can swim in the sea from April to October, and ski on the nearby slopes from October to May.

The semi-tropical weather, which has an average winter low of 43 degrees, allows for a lushness found nowhere else in Russia. Palm, banana, and citrus trees, and an ever-blooming parade of flowers, grace it's shores.

Sochi is almost all mountains, forest, and beach. More than 80% of the territory is part of a national park or the Caucasian State Biosphere Reserve. Historical and architectural monuments, unique flora and fauna, magnificent panoramas, mysterious canyons and caves, and noisy waterfalls are all found in Sochi's parks.

The mountains shelter Sochi from the cold North winds. While cold North Easterly winds rage on the other side of the mountains, cyclamens and mimosas blossom here and people enjoy the sun and the sea.

Sochi is not a typical Russian city filled with Russian culture; culture comes to Sochi - to rest and either attend or perform at the many festivals. Nearly every Russian musical group and performer will make a stop in Sochi, and the many holidaymakers are a ready audience. Kinotavr, the international film festival held in June, is one of the entertainment highlights of the year, with two weeks of back-to-back Russian and foreign films and the chance to see Russian stars. Sochi is the place to see not only Russia's rich and famous, but also the thousands of Russian holidaymakers who continue their annual tradition of rest on the Black Sea coast.

There is a wide range of activities available for both the active and the more sedate. For those with a sense of adventure there is; cave exploring, white river rafting, canoeing, parasailing, jet skiing, snow skiing, banana boats, sailing, cruises, horseback riding, hiking, and much more! For those not so adventurous there are; casinos, discos, theatre, museums, art galleries, tea plantations, concerts, circuses, Stalin's Dacha, and fantastic architecture! Don't forget, Sochi has the best health spas in all of Russia, if not the world!

Sochi is situated in 650 km from Rostov-on-Don and it takes 8 hours driving down there.
