Rostov-on-Don

View from the river Don

Endless fields and free steppes,
strong wind and tender sun,
gold of Scythes and Cossacks awards,
Chehov and Sholohov,
the Quiet Flowing Don…
Fertile, rich and unique land.
The capital of it is Rostov.

Rostov-on-Don (see map) is a large and beautiful city situated on the banks of the River Don, with more then one million inhabitants. The building of a fortress named after St.Dimitry has begun in 1761 in the site of the present-day Rostov-on-Don. The fortress settlements have transformed into a city in 1796 which was officially named Rostov-on-Don in 1806. Rostov-on-Don is an industrial, cultural and scientific centre in the south of Russia today.   It is famous as the Southern Capital of Russia, and is an important junction for all types of traffic, especially those travelling to and from the Caucasus. Rostov is famous for its theatres, places of historical interest, museums, nightclubs, monuments, parks, and the beautiful sights of its satellite towns. The major cultural establishments of the city are the Drama Theatre, the Music Comedy Theatre, the Puppet Theatre, the Museum of Local Lore, the archaeological museum Tanais (III century B.C. - V century A.D.) and the Museum of Fine Arts. Here Alexander Solzhenitsyn studied at the Rostov University, composer  Moussorgsky gave concerts,  and the famous physiologist Pavlov performed his research.

The climate here is typical of Russia with sunny and hot summers, cold and snowy winters.

Whenever you come, it will be a great pleasure for you to walk hand in hand with Your Lady along the streets of Rostov-on-Don!  Bolshaya Sadovaya Street is the main thoroughfare with shops, restaurants, cafes, theatres, cinemas and plenty of beautiful parks. Strolling down Pushkinskaya Street is a most interesting pastime, but there are a couple of museums worth visiting too; the Fine Arts Museum has a good collection of 19th century Russian painting (including Repin, Levitan, Surikov and Perov).

Rostov Central Cathedral

Together you can visit the Museum of Local Lore, which traces the history of the Cossacks in Rostov. An entertaining place to go and watch the local people is the market in the center of the city. You can enjoy listening to classical music in the Concert Hall or in the new Opera and Ballet Theatre, which was opened a few years ago, or you can visit the Main Cathedral to see religious ceremonies and listen to canon singing. You can dance all night in the popular “Titanic”, “Atlantida”, “Dark City”, “Genus” and “Big Sound” nightclubs - or enjoy Russian or international dishes in Italian, Chinese, Spanish and Japanese restaurants.

Atlantida night club

Three kilometers along the river from Rostov is the “Petrovsky Pritchal” restaurant complex built in Peter the First Style, a favorite spot for the locals, where you can have an unforgettable romantic time.  You can savour the best Russian and international dishes there, hire boats, go swimming, and even have a Russian steam bath. Or, you could spend a couple days in the “Kazachy Dozor” Complex, where you can sample the local colour of traditional Cossack life; you can enjoy local dishes, horse-riding, or fishing on the bank of the quiet River Don.
Don Land is famous of its hospitality.  If you would like to feel the Don history, breath fresh air, taste famous Cossack fish soup, go wine tasting, listen the ancient Cossack songs – you are most welcome to stanitsa Starocherkasskaya, which is one of ancient Don Cossack’s settlements.   At past time it was called Tcherkassk and was the Don Land capital.   Tcherkassk was founded by brave and independent people in 1644. Cossacks defended their land from Tatars and Turks. The history of Don Land started here. It is retained in monuments, legends, myths, songs and memories.
